Western Digital came to Mobile World Congress hoping to prove that great things do come in small packages by unveiling a new 400GB SanDisk Extreme card that is touted to be the world's fastest UHS-I flash memory card.
The card's design makes promises, as well. It's shockproof, waterproof, X-ray-proof, and can operate in a wide temperature range, from from a frigid 13 degrees Fahrenheit up to a burning 185 Fahrenheit.
The company also showcased an experimental PCIe SD card with whopping 880MBps speeds. The new 400GB SanDisk Extreme UHS-I microSD card is claimed to offer up to 160MBps read and 90MBps write speeds, making it more than 50 percent faster than the previous SanDisk Extreme UHS-1 microSD cards. Western Digital has used its proprietary 3D NAND technology to deliver faster speeds.
It is worth pointing out here that the new 400GB Extreme UHS-I microSDXC card isn't the fastest option in the market of microSD cards, but it is something that Western Digital is designing specifically to enhance the user experience on mobile devices. The card is also a noted option for shooting 4K HDR videos that are supported by some of the latest Android flagships.
The good news at MWC 2018 is that 5G is steadily progressing from hype to reality. Verizon and AT&T plan to launch limited mobile 5G service this year, while T-Mobile and Sprint are setting things up now for a commercial launch early next year. Handset makers and chipmakers are working to get devices ready for 2019 as well.
The new  MWC speedy 400GB microSD card also supports SD Association’s A2 (Application Performance Class) specification, which makes it more efficient when it comes to processing heavy tasks. This means apps and games stored on the microSD card will open and load quickly.
